10 DAYS IN NORTH PORTUGAL (part 6/8)

DAY 7 - Market in Barcelos (biggest market in North Portugal)

Programme of the day
Today it was all about the market in historical town Barcelos. It´s famous for its biggest market in North Portugal. It takes place every Thursday; you can buy there fresh local fruit and vegetable, dry sausages, superb ham (we had it and it was very very delicious), egg tart pastry and much more. If you are looking for a gift for your loved ones, buy some hand-made craft and art or pottery.
We recommend a rooster (town's famous symbol)... why? Here is the legend of the Rooster of Barcelos.

We closed the day with a fish BBQ at our barn. We bought tasty mackerel, red snapper and some sardines (fish in Portugal is very very cheap... in comparison with London).

Other markets in North Portugal you may want to visit

  • Market in Viana do Castelo – every Friday
  • Market in Ponte de Lima – every Friday
  • Market in Caminha – every Wednesday
